Instructions for Authors

Scope

The mission of SHOCK® is to foster and promote multidisciplinary studies, both experimental and clinical in nature, that critically examine the etiology, mechanisms and novel therapeutics of shock-related pathophysiological conditions. The journal will consider papers in the areas of basic and clinical studies of shock, trauma, sepsis, inflammation, ischemia, and related pathobiological states, with particular emphasis on the biologic mechanisms that determine the response to such injury.

Ethical/Legal Considerations

A submitted manuscript must be an original contribution not previously published (except as an abstract or a preliminary report), must not be under consideration for publication elsewhere, and, if accepted, must not be published elsewhere in similar form, in any language, without the consent of Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. Each person listed as an author is expected to have participated in the study to a significant extent. Although the editors and referees make every effort to ensure the validity of published manuscripts, the final responsibility rests with the authors, not with the Journal, its editors, or the publisher.

Patient anonymity and informed consent: It is the author's responsibility to ensure that a patient's anonymity be carefully protected and to verify that any experimental investigation with human subjects reported in the manuscript was performed with informed consent and following all the guidelines for experimental investigation with human subjects required by the institution(s) with which all the authors are affiliated. Authors should mask patients' eyes and remove patients' names from figures unless they obtain written consent from the patients and submit written consent with the manuscript.

Animal Research: Reporting In Vivo Experiments: SHOCK® endorses the ARRIVE guidelines developed by the National Center for the Replacement, Refinement, and Reduction of Animals in Research (nc3rs) (Shock Supports the Use of Animal Research Reporting Guidelines. Reynolds P, Wall P, van Griensven M, McConnell K, Lang C, Buchman T. Shock 38:1--3, 2012). Authors are expected to use the ARRIVE Guidelines (http://www.nc3rs.org.uk/downloaddoc.asp?id=1206&page=1357&skin=0) when writing papers involving animal use.

Conflicts of interest: Authors must state all possible conflicts of interest in the manuscript, including financial, consultant, institutional and other relationships that might lead to bias or a conflict of interest. If there is no conflict of interest, this should also be explicitly stated as none declared. All sources of funding should be acknowledged in the manuscript. All relevant conflicts of interest and sources of funding should be included on the title page of the manuscript with the heading “Conflicts of Interest and Source of Funding.”

For example:

Conflicts of Interest and Source of Funding: “Author A” has received honoraria from “Company 1.” “Author B” is currently receiving a grant (#12345) from “Organization Y,” and is on the speaker’s bureau for “Organization X” – the CME organizers for Company 1. For the remaining authors none were declared.

Copyright: In addition, each author must complete and submit the journal’s copyright transfer agreement, which includes a section on the disclosure of potential conflicts of interest based on the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals” (www.icmje.org/update.html). The form is available on the manuscript submission page https://www.editorialmanager.com/shock/ and can be completed and submitted electronically. Please note that authors may sign the copyright transfer agreement form electronically. PLEASE NOTE that in order for an electronic signature to be considered valid, production needs to receive the original electronic file of the CTA. Compliance with NIH and Other Research Funding Agency Accessibility Requirements: A number of research funding agencies now require or request authors to submit the post-print (the article after peer review and acceptance but not the final published article) to a repository that is accessible online by all without charge. As a service to our authors, LWW will identify to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) articles that require deposit and will transmit the post-print of an article based on research funded in whole or in part by the National Institutes of Health, Wellcome Trust, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, or other funding agencies to PubMed Central. The revised Copyright Transfer Agreement provides the mechanism.

Pre-Print Servers: Posting of un-refereed manuscripts to a community pre-print server by the author will not be considered prior publication, provided that the following conditions are met: 1) During submission, authors must acknowledge pre-print server deposition and provide any associated accession numbers or DOIs; 2) Versions of a manuscript that have been altered as a result of the peer review process may not be deposited; 3) The pre-print version cannot itself have been indexed in MEDLINE or PubMed; 4) Upon publication, authors are responsible for updating the archived pre-print with a DOI and link to the published version of the article.

Open Access

LWW's hybrid open access (OA) option is offered to authors whose articles have been accepted for publication. With this choice, articles are made freely available online immediately upon publication. All authors submitting work to SHOCK® will be given the opportunity to select the OA option upon manuscript acceptance. Authors who select this option retain their copyright, but grant LWW a license to publish the article and identify itself as the original publisher. This choice has no influence on the peer review and acceptance processes. These articles are subject to the journal's standard peer review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their merit.

The open access option entails:

Copyright Transfer Forms - Each author must complete and submit the journal's copyright transfer agreement, which includes a section on the disclosure of potential conflicts of interest based on the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (www.icmje.org/update.html).

A copy of the form is made available to the submitting author within the Editorial Manager submission process. Co-authors will automatically receive an Email with instructions on completing the form upon submission.

Authors of accepted peer-reviewed articles have the choice to pay a fee to allow perpetual unrestricted online access to their published article to readers globally, immediately upon publication. Authors may take advantage of the open access option at the point of acceptance to ensure that this choice has no influence on the peer review and acceptance process. These articles are subject to the journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.

The article processing charge (APC) is charged on acceptance of the article and should be paid within 30 days by the author, funding agency or institution. Authors retain their copyright for all articles they opt to publish open access. Authors grant Wolters Kluwer an exclusive license to publish the article and the article is made available under the terms of a Creative Commons user license. Open access articles are freely available to read, download and share from the time of publication under the terms of the Creative Commons License Attribution-NonCommerical No Derivative (CC BY-NC-ND) license. Publication Policy

SHOCK® publishes regular Research Articles, Rapid Communications, Review Articles and Letters to the Editor. Please note that SHOCK® does not publish Case Reports. Rapid Communications should be brief reports of especially important and timely findings in the field. Published length should be three to four pages, including figures and references. Reviews will be by invitation of the Editor but recommendations for topics and authors are welcomed. The Editor also invites letters expressing comments on dissenting opinions concerning papers recently published in SHOCK®. Letters must not exceed 500 words and should be submitted double-spaced with any references prepared as for regular research reports. Publication of submitted letters will be at the discretion of the Editor. Each author should include his/her complete address, along with telephone, fax and email. All submitted manuscripts will be critically refereed by at least two members of the editorial board or expert consultants.

Preparation of Manuscript

Manuscripts that do not adhere to the following instructions will be returned to the corresponding author for technical revision before undergoing peer review.

On-line manuscript submission: Authors are requested to submit their manuscripts online at http://www.editorialmanager.com/shock.

First-time users: Please click the Register button from the main menu and enter the requested information. On successful registration, you will be sent an e-mail indicating your user name and password. Print a copy of this information for future reference. Note: If you have received an e-mail from us with an assigned user ID and password, or if you are a repeat user, do not register again, just log in. Once you have an assigned ID and password, re-registration is unnecessary, even if your status changes (that is, author, reviewer, or editor).

Authors: Please click the login button from the menu at the top of the page and log in to the system as an Author. Cover Letter: A cover letter should accompany all manuscripts submitted to SHOCK® indicating that the manuscript has been submitted solely to this journal and has not previously been published in any form in another publication of any type, with the exception of preliminary reports in abstract form. In situations where the review of the submitted manuscript depends highly upon another manuscript submitted for publication but not yet published, a copy of that manuscript should be included with the submission.

Manuscripts must be typewritten and double-spaced. Number all pages in sequence beginning with the title page. The sections should be arranged in the following order:

Title page: Include on the title page (a) complete manuscript title; (b) authors' full names and affiliations; (c) corresponding author’s name and address, degree(s), fax number, telephone number, and e-mail address; (d) address for reprints if different from that of corresponding author; (e) all sources of support, including pharmaceutical and industry support, or a statement of no relevant conflicts of interest; and (f) a running head of not more than 45 characters.

The title page must also include disclosure of funding received for this work from any of the following organizations: National Institutes of Health (NIH); Wellcome Trust; Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI); and other(s).

Abstract: An informative abstract of approximately 250 words should state concisely the purpose and pertinent methods of the study, as well as the findings and specific conclusions. This abstract should be suitable, without rewording, for use by abstracting journals and indexing services.

Keywords: Submit five to eight key words appropriate for indexing purposes. Do not repeat words or terms used in the title.

Text: The text of the manuscript should begin on a new page and be arranged as follows: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, and Discussion. The use of subheadings and paragraph titles within these headings is encouraged for sake of clarity. For standard abbreviations, authors should follow the guidelines in the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual, 5th edition. All other abbreviations should be defined when first used and listed in a footnote. Authors are encouraged to use abbreviations sparingly and to pay careful attention to avoidance of ambiguity. Manuscripts involving the use of laboratory animals or human subjects must clearly state adherence to appropriate guidelines and approval of protocols by their institutional review boards. Acknowledgements should appear at the end of the text prior to the references.

References: In the text, references should be cited consecutively by numbers in parentheses. In the reference section, they should be listed in numerical order; include the names of all authors and complete title of the article cited. References must be restricted to directly relevant published works, papers or abstracts that have been accepted for publication. Usually, the total number of references should not exceed 50. Journal abbreviations should follow Index Medicus style http://www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd/serials/lji.html. References must be double-spaced with only one reference per number. In the following examples, notice the punctuation; do not use all capitals; do not underline.

Tables: Tables should be numbered in order of appearance in the text with Arabic numerals. Each table should have a title, and if necessary, an explanatory legend. All tables must be referred to in the text. Under no circumstances should a table repeat data that are presented in an illustration. Statistical measures of variation (i.e. standard deviation, standard error) should be identified and non-significant decimal places in tabular data should be omitted.

Figure legends: A legend should be provided for each illustration. The legend should be informative and must define all abbreviations and symbols used in the illustration.

Figures: All illustrations should be of professional quality and must be clear even after reduction in size for publication (see requirements, below) Size artwork to fit within one of these three widths: 3-1/2 inches (1 column), 5-1/2 inches (1-1/2 columns), or 7-1/5 inches (2 columns). Use Helvetica or similar font, 12 point or larger in size. Authors should provide high quality figures. Illustrations should be numbered in order of appearance with Arabic numerals. Actual magnification of all photomicrographs should be provided, preferably by placing a length scale on the print.

Upload each figure to Editorial Manager in conjunction with your manuscript text and tables.

B) Digital Artwork Guideline Checklist

Here are the basics to have in place before submitting your digital artwork:

Artwork should be saved as TIFF, EPS, or MS Office (DOC, PPT, XLS) files. High resolution PDF files are also acceptable.

Crop out any white or black space surrounding the image.

Diagrams, drawings, graphs, and other line art must be vector or saved at a resolution of at least 1200 dpi. If created in an MS Office program, send the native (DOC, PPT, XLS) file.

Photographs, radiographs and other halftone images must be saved at a resolution of at least 300 dpi.

Photographs and radiographs with text must be saved as postscript or at a resolution of at least 600 dpi.

Each figure must be saved and submitted as a separate file. Figures should not be embedded in the manuscript text file.

Remember:

Cite figures consecutively in your manuscript.

Number figures in the figure legend in the order in which they are discussed.

Upload figures consecutively to the Editorial Manager web site and enter figure numbers consecutively in the Description field when uploading the files.

Color figures: The journal accepts for publication color figures that will enhance an article. Authors who submit color figures that are not considered essential to the article content will receive an estimate of the cost for color reproduction. If an author decides not to pay for color reproduction, they can request that the figures be converted to black and white at no charge. Color figures are displayed on electronic versions of the journal at no charge.

Illustration digital requirements: Electronic art should be created/scanned and saved and submitted as either a TIFF (tagged image file format), an EPS (encapsulated PostScript) file, or a PPT (PowerPoint) file. Line art must have a resolution of at least 1200 dpi (dots per inch), and electronic photographs--radiographs, CT scans, and so on--and scanned images must have a resolution of at least 300 dpi. If fonts are used in the artwork, they must be converted to paths or outlines or they must be embedded in the files. Color images must be created/scanned and saved and submitted as CMYK files. Please note that artwork generated from office suite programs such as CorelDRAW and MS Word and artwork downloaded from the Internet (JPEG or GIF files) cannot be used.

Supplemental Digital Content (SDC):Authors may submit supplemental digital content (SDC) via Editorial Manager to enhance their article’s text and to be considered for online-only posting. Supplemental digital content may include the following types of content: text documents, graphs, tables, figures, graphics, illustrations, audio, and video. On the “Attach Files” page of the submission process, please select Supplemental Audio, Video, or Data for your uploaded file as the Submission Item. If an article with SDC is accepted, our production staff will create a URL with the SDC file. The URL will be placed in the call-out within the article. SDC files are not copy-edited by LWW staff, they will be presented digitally as submitted.

SDC Call-outs: Supplemental Digital Content must be cited consecutively in the text of the submitted manuscript. Citations should include the type of material submitted (Audio, Figure, Table, etc.), be clearly labeled as "Supplemental Digital Content," include the sequential list number, and provide a description of the supplemental content. All descriptive text should be included in the call-out as it will not appear elsewhere in the article.

Example:

We performed many tests on the degrees of flexibility in the elbow (see Video, Supplemental Digital Content 1, which demonstrates elbow flexibility) and found our results inconclusive.

List of Supplemental Digital Content: A listing of Supplemental Digital Content must be submitted at the end of the manuscript file. Include the SDC number and file type of the Supplemental Digital Content. This text will be removed by our production staff and not be published.

Page Charges

Authors are expected to pay a page charge of $55/page from Research Funds to help defray publication costs: Editorial decisions are not contingent upon ability to pay page charges.

After Acceptance

Page proofs and corrections: Corresponding authors will receive electronic page proofs to check the copyedited and typeset article before publication. Portable document format (PDF) files of the typeset pages and support documents (e.g., reprint order form) will be sent to the corresponding author by e-mail. Complete instructions will be provided with the e-mail for downloading and printing the files and for faxing the corrected page proofs to the publisher. It is the author's responsibility to ensure that there are no errors in the proofs. Changes that have been made to conform to journal style will stand if they do not alter the authors' meaning. Only the most critical changes to the accuracy of the content will be made. Changes that are stylistic or are a reworking of previously accepted material will be disallowed. The publisher reserves the right to deny any changes that do not affect the accuracy of the content. Authors may be charged for alterations to the proofs beyond those required to correct errors or to answer queries. Proofs must be checked carefully and corrections faxed within 24 to 48 hours of receipt, as requested in the cover letter accompanying the page proofs.
